The Effectiveness Of Perineal Wound Care Counseling On Knowledge Of Infection Prevention In Postpartum Mothers
Keywords:
Counseling, postpartum, perineal wound careAbstract
The postpartum period is a critical time because complications often arise during this time, one of which is infection.
One contributing factor to infection is trauma to the birth canal, which serves as a breeding ground for bacteria.
Perineal infections can increase the incidence of postpartum morbidity, making perineal wound care essential. The
objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of perineal wound care counseling on knowledge of infection
prevention among postpartum mothers. The study employed a pre-experimental design using a one-group pretest
posttest approach. The sample consisted of 47 postpartum mothers with perineal wounds of up to grade two in the
service area of the Dolo Community Health Center, selected via consecutive sampling. The results showed that after
counseling, 33 respondents (70.2%) had good knowledge. The Wilcoxon test results showed a p-value of 0.102
(>0.05), indicating that the increase in knowledge was not yet statistically significant. Providing perineal wound
care counseling improved the knowledge scores of postpartum mothers, although it did not yet show a statistically
significant difference. Healthcare workers are advised to provide repeated education using more varied methods
and media to enhance the effectiveness of counseling.
